Penn Station-History

Penn Station is located in one of the busiest parts of Manhattan on 7th and 8th Ave between 31st and 34th streets (depending on which entrance you come in from), 10001 in Midtown Manhattan. The original building's construction started in 1901 and finished in 1910 by Stanford White of McKim, Mead and White Architecture firm. Penn Station was a very roomy place, with many different features of Greek and Roman art such like Ionic and Doric columns near the front entrance. This was until the owner of the property could no longer keep up with the cost of maintaining it, so it was demolished. It was also demolished because in the 1950s, more people had cars, so there was no use for trains. It was demolished in 1963, and its remodeling finished in 1969 right after Madison Square Garden. The old penn station was built out of concrete, barrel vaults, steel, and granite. 550,000 cubic feet of stone , 27,000 tons of steel, and 15 million bricks were also used to build the old Penn Station. It now houses 21 train tracks, along with railroad connections to other states.
